JCHS Press

JCHSP was established in 2011 for the purpose of publishing works of merit contributing to the history of Johnson County and of the State of Missouri. The first title from the press is Old-Time Fiddling: Hal Sappington, Missouri Fiddler by Rose Marie (R.M.) Kinder and Kristine Lowe-Martin, published in 2012.  It’s an  affectionate look at a fine fiddler and his musical community, a lovely book about music in and around Johnson County. Check it out!

From reviews:

“A welcome addition to the impressive shelf of books and recordings that document Missouri’s rich and complex traditions of old-time fiddle music. . . It shapes the story and music of Hal Sappingon based on interviews and in the context of commentary by those who wish to help his music and story enrich the lives of others.” Howard Wight Marshall, Old Time Herald.

Another review (also by Howard Wight Marshall) is available in Missouri Historical Society Newsletter Vol. 36.3-4, Fall 2012 (online).

“In an interview format, Missouri fiddler Hal Sappington describes his playing style and explains the influences that have shaped his music. The authors place Sappington’s story within the broader tradition of Missouri fiddling.” Missouri Historical Review, Vol. 107.3, April 2013.
